Passive flexibility tests measure how far a limb can be pushed, which is a different question from how far it can be held.
Range you cannot control is not range you own
Push a sprinter's straight leg toward their chest and it might travel ninety degrees. Ask them to lift it there themselves, with no hands, and hold it, and quite often it collapses twenty degrees short. That gap is the whole argument about flexibility screening, and it gets glossed over every time a range of motion number is written down without saying who produced the motion.
Passive range is a property of tissue and tolerance. Bone shape sets a hard ceiling, capsule and ligament set a softer one, and above that the limit is largely how much stretch sensation the athlete is willing to accept on that particular morning. Active range is a different thing entirely. It is the portion of that arc where muscle can still generate meaningful force, where the joint is stable, and where the nervous system has a map of what to do.
The territory between the two is where injuries live. A joint dragged into a position by momentum, with no muscular authority over it, is being held by passive structures alone. Ligaments and capsules are good at resisting slow load and poor at absorbing fast surprises. Every landing, cut and stumble is a fast surprise.
I have watched athletes chase passive range for months, get it, and change nothing about how they move, because nobody trained the new end of the arc. You cannot stretch your way into control. Control comes from producing force where you previously produced none, which is uncomfortable, slow and much less satisfying than watching a number improve.
There is a second problem with the tests themselves. Muscle length under a clinician's hand is measured on a body that is warm, relaxed, lying down and not being asked to do anything. Sport happens standing, tired, loaded and reactive. A shoulder that rotates beautifully on a treatment table can lose a chunk of that arc when the athlete has to stabilise their own trunk at the same time, because some of the muscle capacity is now spent elsewhere.
So the honest version of a range assessment has two numbers and the interesting one is the difference between them.
Big passive range with poor active control is not flexibility. It is a joint with more places to go wrong.
