An injured athlete gets a medical plan and an empty calendar, and the skill quietly rots.
Rehab is the one block with no coaching in it
Hand an athlete to the medical staff and something strange happens to your coaching. It stops. The player is now a case, the case belongs to somebody else, and for ten weeks the person who taught them everything about the sport speaks to them mainly to ask how the knee is.
The tissue gets managed well in most decent setups. Loads are graded, ranges come back, strength is measured. What nobody owns is the sport itself, and the sport is a perishable thing. Decision speed, the reading of a shape before it forms, the timing of a movement against another human being, the automatic small adjustments that took years to install. None of it is being touched while the athlete does leg press and watches the group from the side.
Then they come back, pass every physical test, and look slow. Everyone concludes they are not fit yet. Often they are fitter than they have ever been and simply have not made a real decision in three months.
The fix costs almost nothing. An injured athlete should still be at training, on the grass or the court, in the room. Not standing at the fence with a hood up. Given a job. Call the drill from behind the line. Watch the opposite position and report on it. Do the technical part they can do, seated, one handed, walking, whatever the limb allows. Hands stay busy even when legs cannot. A cricketer with a hamstring injury can still work on the grip and the release. A midfielder in a boot can still be asked, live, where the next pass was.
Video work is the other underused piece, and I mean video with a question attached, not an hour of highlights. Pause it before the event and ask what happens next. That is the skill you are losing, and it can be trained sitting down.
There is a social argument too. Injured athletes drift out of the group, get quiet, and start to feel like staff. Bringing them back into the coaching conversation keeps them inside the team, which matters when they finally return and have to earn a place back from people who have not missed a session.
Rehab is a training block. It has a coach in every other block of the year. Give it one.
