One bout of unfamiliar eccentric work leaves the muscle markedly more resistant to damage for weeks, which changes how a preseason should be built.
Soreness protects you the second time you do the same work
Do a session of downhill running for the first time in a year and you will be wrecked for three days. Do the identical session a fortnight later and you will be mildly stiff. Nothing about your fitness changed meaningfully in those two weeks. The muscle changed what it does with that specific load, and the size of that protection is one of the more striking effects in the whole of exercise physiology.
The mechanism is layered. Some of it is structural, with sarcomeres adding in series so the muscle operates at a slightly longer optimum length and each unit is stretched less for the same movement. Some is in how the connective tissue framework around and within the muscle handles distributed strain. Some is neural, with the recruitment pattern shifting so the load is shared across more fibres instead of hammering the few that answered first. The inflammatory response itself is also reduced second time round.
What matters practically is the duration and the specificity. The protection lasts weeks, sometimes months, and it fades slowly. It is also stubbornly specific. Protect a muscle at one length or one movement pattern and it is largely unprotected in another, which is why an athlete who has done months of gym work can still be flattened by a single session of a new sport.
So the first exposure to any unfamiliar loading pattern is the dangerous one, and it should be treated as an event in its own right rather than as the beginning of a progression. A small, deliberately underwhelming first dose buys most of the protective effect. Repeat it a few days later and you can then progress properly, into a muscle that will tolerate what would otherwise have damaged it.
Preseasons routinely get this backwards. The first week is heavy because everyone is fresh and enthusiastic, and the pattern of injuries in that week is not a coincidence.
The same principle applies to the return from any break. An athlete coming back from three weeks away has lost a good part of the protection they had, even though their strength numbers barely moved.
Which means the safest hard session an athlete can do is the one they did badly a week earlier.
