Testing rested athletes answers the wrong question

Every measurement in the building is taken on Wednesday morning, warm, unhurried, before anything has been done. Almost nothing that the measurement is meant to predict happens under those conditions.

Injuries cluster late. Late in a half, late in a game, late in a congested week, at the point where control has degraded and force production has dropped. If your model of an athlete comes exclusively from fresh testing, you have described a state that occurs for about two hours a week and used it to make claims about the state that occupies the dangerous hours. It is a reasonable thing to do only if fresh performance predicts fatigued performance, and the whole point of fatigue is that different people lose different amounts of it at different rates.

That variation is the signal. Two athletes with identical rested scores can behave completely differently after forty minutes of running, and the one whose numbers hold up is not necessarily the one who looked better at rest. Rested testing cannot distinguish them, which means it is blind to precisely the property people want it for.

The reason nobody tests tired is obvious and mostly good. Coaches will not surrender the end of a session, athletes hate it, and the data is messier because you cannot standardise how tired somebody is. Fair. But you can do it four times a season rather than never, and you can piggyback on situations that already exist: measure after the hardest session of the week instead of before it, at the same point in the schedule each time.

The messiness is manageable if the context is recorded. The blindness of rested-only testing is not manageable at all, because it does not announce itself. It looks like clean data.

There is a version of this argument that goes too far, and I want to avoid it. Rested testing is the right way to track long-term adaptation, since it removes the day-to-day noise that would swamp a slow trend. That is a real job and it does it well.

Just do not let it answer a question about how a body holds up under fatigue. It has never once been in the room where that question is decided.
