Sweat testing is one of the simplest measurements a support team performs, and one of the more informative. It exists because fluid loss varies so much between individuals that group advice is close to meaningless.
The measurement is a weight change
An athlete is weighed before a session and again afterwards, with fluid consumed added back and urine passed subtracted. The difference approximates the fluid lost through sweat.
Body mass changes over a session are dominated by fluid, since the mass of fuel used and of gases exchanged is small by comparison over a couple of hours.
The method is crude but adequate. Its value comes from being repeatable across conditions rather than from precision in any single measurement. Scales and a consistent procedure are all it requires.
Individual variation is the finding that matters
Athletes in the same session, wearing the same kit and doing the same work, routinely lose very different amounts. Differences of several times over between teammates are ordinary.
Body size explains part of it, since a larger athlete generates more heat and has more surface area. Fitness, acclimatisation and genetics account for much of the rest.
Because the spread is that wide, a single instruction about how much to drink will overshoot for some athletes and undershoot badly for others. Squad-level advice therefore has limited practical use.
Conditions change the result substantially
Sweat rate rises with air temperature, humidity, clothing insulation and work intensity. A test performed in mild conditions predicts little about a match played in heat.
Teams therefore repeat testing across a range of conditions and build a picture of how each athlete responds rather than recording a single figure.
Acclimatisation complicates it further, because repeated heat exposure increases sweat rate while making sweat more dilute. The same athlete changes over a few weeks in a new climate. Testing is repeated after a move for exactly that reason.
Sodium concentration is a separate measurement
How much salt is lost depends on sweat composition, which varies widely and is not predicted by sweat rate. Two athletes losing the same volume can lose very different amounts of sodium.
Collecting sweat from patches on the skin allows concentration to be estimated, though results vary by site and by collection method, so figures are treated as approximate. Salt residue visible on clothing is a cruder indication of the same thing.
What teams do with the numbers
The output is usually an individual drinking range rather than a fixed prescription, since intake also depends on gut tolerance and on what is practical during play.
The information also flags athletes whose losses are large enough to need planning attention, and any medical interpretation of results belongs with the team's qualified staff. Large repeated deficits are treated as a scheduling problem rather than a personal failing.
