Fibre is a normal and useful part of an athlete's diet, and yet it is commonly reduced sharply in the final days before a race. The reason concerns what happens to fibre inside the gut rather than any general assessment of it.
Fibre passes through largely undigested
Human digestive enzymes cannot break down most fibre, so it travels into the large intestine intact. There it holds water and provides material that gut bacteria ferment.
Both effects increase the volume of material moving through the digestive tract. Under ordinary conditions that is desirable, since it supports regular transit and feeds the gut microbial population.
Before a long event the calculation changes, because that same volume is mass the athlete carries and material that must be tolerated during sustained mechanical disturbance. Running in particular shakes the gut contents continuously for hours.
Exercise diverts blood away from the gut
During hard exercise, blood flow is redirected toward working muscle and toward the skin for cooling. The digestive tract receives substantially less than it does at rest.
Reduced flow slows digestion and impairs the gut lining's normal function. Material already in transit moves less predictably, and the tract becomes more sensitive to its contents.
This is why symptoms that never appear in training at easy paces can appear at competition intensity, when the diversion of blood flow is at its greatest. Heat compounds it, since cooling competes for the same circulation.
Fermentation produces gas at an inconvenient time
Bacterial fermentation of fibre produces gas as a by-product, which is normal and usually unnoticed. During an event it contributes to cramping and to urgency.
Certain fermentable carbohydrates produce more gas than others, and individual tolerance varies widely depending on the composition of a person's gut bacteria.
Reducing intake for a short period before an event lowers the amount of fermentable material present without changing the athlete's long-term diet in any meaningful way. A day or two is short enough to leave the gut population intact.
The reduction is deliberately brief
Fibre supports gut function, satiety and the microbial population, so removing it for extended periods is counterproductive. The reduction is applied for a day or a few days.
Normal intake resumes after the event. Athletes who follow a low-residue pattern habitually rather than briefly lose the benefits without gaining anything competitively. The gut population itself shifts when fibre is withdrawn for long periods.
Individual variation makes rehearsal essential
Tolerance differs enormously between people, and the foods that cause problems for one athlete are unremarkable for another. Nothing in the general pattern predicts an individual response.
This is why pre-competition eating is rehearsed during training rather than introduced on the day. Persistent gut symptoms during exercise warrant assessment by a qualified practitioner rather than dietary experimentation.
