Offseason strength programs in American team sport are built so the hardest work finishes well before camp opens. The gap is deliberate and it exists because adaptation is delayed.
Fitness and fatigue move together
Hard training raises fitness and fatigue at the same time. Performance on any given day reflects the difference between them rather than fitness alone.
Fatigue rises faster and falls faster. Fitness accumulates more slowly and persists longer once built, which is what makes the timing question interesting.
An athlete tested at the end of a hard block therefore performs worse than they will two weeks later, despite being fitter than they were at the start.
Why the reduction comes before camp
Reducing volume while keeping intensity allows fatigue to dissipate without losing the adaptations. Load falls, the heavy work stays, and performance rises without further training.
Camp is when coaches evaluate, positions are contested and the injury rate is highest. Arriving with residual fatigue costs the athlete on all three counts.
Fatigue also degrades movement quality, which matters in a period of high-volume contact work. The taper is a risk decision as much as a performance one.
The competing demand of the season itself
Once the season starts, strength training becomes secondary. Practice, travel and games occupy the schedule, and the weight room shifts to maintenance.
Maintaining strength requires much less work than building it, which is fortunate, because much less is what the calendar allows.
So the offseason carries the whole building load. Whatever is not developed before camp will not be developed until the following spring.
How the blocks are usually sequenced
Early offseason work tends to emphasize volume and general capacity, rebuilding tissue tolerance after a season of accumulated wear.
The middle blocks shift toward maximal strength, with heavier loads and lower repetitions, since strength is the base that power development draws on.
The final blocks emphasize speed of force production, with lighter loads moved fast, jumps and sprint work. This is also the phase that tolerates the taper best.
Why the schedule is set by the calendar, not the athlete
College and professional calendars fix the start of camp, which fixes the taper, which fixes every block before it. Planning runs backward from a date nobody controls.
That creates friction for athletes on different trajectories, particularly those rehabilitating injuries who need more building time than the calendar contains.
Which is why individual plans diverge from the squad template most in the final weeks. The date is fixed; the readiness of any particular athlete is not.
